Experience the Magic of Winter Solstice

Indianapolis area congregations come together in an earth-affirming celebration of the return of the Light

While many are caught up in the hectic pace of the holiday season this time of year, Indianapolis area congregations and community members are preparing to honor the return of the Light on the longest night of the year. The 10th Annual Indy Winter Solstice Celebration is a transformative, earth-affirming joyous event—the only one of its kind in central Indiana. This year, you are invited to set aside the shopping list and take time out for this magical, music-filled evening.

The celebration is based on the Winter Solstice Singing Ritual by Julie Forrest Middleton, a Unitarian Universalist, and Stasa Morgan Appel, a self-described Quaker witch. This non-denominational, family-friendly event weaves together readings, stories, choir, and congregational singing for an evening ranging from the meditative to raucous, all deeply powerful and joyous. It is more than a performance, it’s more than a worship service. It is a feast of sound and spirit.

This year, the Solstice Choir is conducted by Pam Blevins Hinkle, former conductor of the Indianapolis Women’s Chorus. Marg Herder provides original music with sanctuary and altar design by local artists, Stephanie Lewis Robertson and Kate Oberreich.

Since 2010 the solstice team has also conducted the ritual at the Indiana Women’s Prison. This important ministry provides a critically needed religious alternative, building bridges to incarcerated Christian women who have sought conversation—in and outside the prison—in order to better understand the value of religious plurality.

The celebration will be held on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Indianapolis, 615 W. 43rd Street, Indianapolis, IN 46208.

Since its inception, this popular event has attracted standing room only crowds. Arrive early to ensure a seat. Doors open at 6:30 PM and starts at 7:00 PM.

All are invited to a Chili Supper at 5:00 PM to benefit the Central Indiana Unitarian Universalist Citywide OWL program. Our Whole Lives is a sexuality education curricula for all ages emphasizing caring, compassion, respect, and justice. It helps adolescents address their attitudes, values, and feelings about themselves, their sexuality, and others’ sexuality.
